Sustainable Salpausselkä Geopark partner

A landscape shaped by water

Salpausselkä Geopark stretches from the legendary terrains of Salpausselkä in Lahti to the large lake landscapes of southern Päijänne, where the capital region gets its drinking water. The mighty Salpausselkä, deposited on the edge of the continental glacier by ancient glacial rivers, cut through the area as forested ridges and are at their most impressive here. These edge formations created at the end of the ice age are the most internationally known geological natural heritage in Finland. They form a unique entity in the Salpausselkä Geopark area, together with ancient rocks, hundreds of lakes and ridges facing north like a fan.

There is also something particularly valuable underground

The Salpausselkä hides huge reserves of clean groundwater, which can be enjoyed as top-quality tap water. In the spring of 2022, the area of six municipalities received UNESCO Global Geopark status and joined the global network of geologically significant areas, which brings together and highlights both unique destinations and actors promoting sustainable tourism in their area.
